Amidst the flurry of training and travel, the 4th of July arrived like a refreshing breeze. Moraine Airpark embraced the holiday with an unplanned yet delightful celebration, transforming into an impromptu airshow. There were no Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) to contend with, no rigid schedules—just a gathering of aircraft rolled out onto the verdant grass, a welcoming of neighbors to the field, rides for children, formation flying among friends, and a variety of engaging activities. This spontaneous communal event was nothing short of enchanting. Moraine, in its unassuming charm, revealed its true magic.
Brad suggested we showcase Big Boy on the 'show line'. I was eager to comply! But our day was not solely devoted to displaying Big Boy; I also had the pleasure of riding with Daun in his Navion. We watched in awe as another Navion performed graceful aerobatics. Our own plans for aerobatic maneuvers were temporarily set aside, as a few passenger dogs in the backseat reminded us of the paramount importance of stability in air travel. Undeterred, Daun and I took several passengers up in Big Boy. Daun, a fellow Bonanza enthusiast with extensive experience, displayed a remarkable flying skill that was both humbling and inspiring. Observing Brad and Daun effortlessly maneuver these aircraft was a true spectacle. Daun even imparted some basic formation flying techniques, and we engaged in a formation flight with the Navion, capturing stunning images of Big Boy as it cut through the sky.
As the day waned, Moraine's open-door policy harmonized with the city's fireworks display, visible just beyond the end of the runway. As twilight descended, all aircraft were safely landed, and everyone gathered on the wings of their individual aircraft to watch the dazzling display. It was a moment that I imagine felt akin to participating in an airshow—almost.
The celebration, though exhilarating, tugged gently at my heart, bringing Shawn to mind. I missed him dearly and hoped that next year, we might share this joyful experience together. I was certain Shawn would find as much delight in it as I did.
