Today marked the culmination of our journey—Big Boy’s final flight home to Philadelphia. This week has been a tapestry of exhilarating experiences, with over twelve hours logged in the air. By day’s end, our logbook would record over twenty hours—a remarkable feat in such a fleeting period. My gratitude for Brad’s unwavering support throughout this adventure knows no bounds. He is not only an exceptional individual but also a cherished friend. The camaraderie shared with Daun Jr., Sr., and the rest of the crew in the hangar has been a highlight. I am resolute in my intention to visit Moraine frequently now, especially with the journey reduced to just a few hours by air, a significant contrast to the usual ten to twelve-hour car ride.
Last evening, Brad arranged for Daun Sr. to assist with Daun Jr.’s use of 'Olive Oil' on Saturday ('Olive Oil' affectionately-called is a Bonanza of similar make-year as 'Big Boy' but is painted, well, Olive green). Brad had hoped to accompany me on the final leg back to Philadelphia but required a ride home. Daun Sr. graciously accommodated the request. After loading Big Boy with our bags and essentials, we embarked on our flight home. The leg was nothing short of magnificent—clear skies and awe-inspiring vistas unfolded beneath us. The landscape, viewed from above, revealed a new dimension; it was a perspective I had never known, having traversed this route from Eastern Pennsylvania to Western Ohio by car since childhood, visiting family in Cincinnati.
The timing of our flight allowed me to log some valuable night flight time and a night landing. Upon arrival, Shawn awaited at the airport—having taken the bus from home while my boss had kindly brought my car to the airport. We savored a late dinner together, relishing the well-earned rest that lay ahead. The following morning, Daun Jr. took to the skies in Olive Oil to fetch Brad and return him home.
Brad, your assistance has been invaluable once more. Shawn and I have grown deeply attached to Big Boy (N793D), and we carry forward with a sense of profound appreciation and affection.
